Smilies are little graphics that are displayed when certain sequences of letters are typed. Originally the came from the very old days of computers when someone noticed that if you typed :-) and looked at it sideways, it resembled a smiling face. Yahoo took that idea a little farther and created graphics for the smiles. Now the graphics are animated GIF files. Below is a table showing the currently available smilies. I took the graphics and enlarged them so they are easier to see.

Note: there is no need to download or install these smilies. They are part of the standard Yahoo Messenger installation.
